The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is found over the Cooper River and spans 1,546 feet, connecting Charleston to Mount Pleasant. It was built to replace two other cantilever truss bridges, the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge built in 1926 and the Silas N. Pearman Bridge built in 1966, which had both become obsolete. Designed by Parsons Brincherhoff, the new bridge was constructed to withstand winds up to 300 mile-per-hour, 7.4 scale earthquakes, and boating accidents. Around its towers there are one-acre land sections that keep boats and ships from hitting the structure if they lose control. This magnificent 8-lane bridge was completed in 2005.
