Michigan consists of two main peninsulas with the longest freshwater coastline in the world. In addition to bordering four of the five Great Lakes, it has just fewer than 65,000 inland lakes and ponds making it the leading U.S. state for recreational boating. Part of the Michigan-231 state turnpike, the Grand River Bridge was officially opened in 2015 after the Michigan Department of Transportation held a ceremonial 1k marathon that included 231 runners to celebrate its completion. This 2-lane, 3,709-foot-long bridge is the 7th longest bridge in the state and consists of mainly steel beams.
