Washington is also known for its impressive structural engineering, having over 1000 dams controlling its vast network of waterways. One example of impressive structural engineering is the historic Monroe Street Bridge in Spokane. This concrete deck arch bridge acts as a replacement for the two failed bridges that came before it. It was designed by John Chester Ralston and stretches 896 feet across the Spokane River. Between 1925 and 1934 the bridge was updated as the city of Spokane became more modern, transitioning to electric lighting and removing the electric car railways. By the late 1990s the bridge had weakened, resulting in the bridge being closed down in 2003. It was later broken down to its center arch and restored.
