San Diego, California is commonly known as “America’s Finest City” and is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in southern California. Southern California is attractive for many reasons, but predominantly for the miles and miles of white-sand beaches and the ideal weather. One the most recognized landmarks on the area is the San Diego–Coronado Bridge by the principal architect Robert Mosher. Finally opened to traffic in 1989, this immense bridge is made of 20,000 tons of steel and 94,000 cubic yards of concrete. The bridge spans 2.1 miles long with 5 lanes of traffic, crossing the San Diego Bay and is part of State Route 75. Around 900,000 cubic yards of fill were used to fill 100-foot supports in the bay bed. In 1970, the bridge won an award from the American Institute of Steel Construction for the longest continuing box girder in the world, which has since been surpassed.
