The Main Street Bridge in Columbus is a large suspension bridge that spans 700 feet over the Scioto River with a large incline arch. It is the first single-rib-tied inclined arch structure in North America. Originally built in 1937, it was closed in 2002 due to needed repairs. It was redesigned by a professor from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Dr. Spiro Pollalis, and was reopened in 2010. In the new design the main arch was made taller but shortened by about 80 feet, saving the reconstruction budget from paying for 60,000 extra pounds of steel. There are two decks on the high strength concrete and steel bridge, one with eastbound and westbound traffic and one for pedestrians.
