The state’s official name is the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations giving it the longest name of any U.S. state in addition to being the geographically smallest. The state is split into two distinct geographical regions. The southeastern part of the state is known for its coastline, and with 200 square miles of its area being comprised of water, it is known for its 30 separate islands in the bay. The northwestern region of the state is known more for its forests. Commonly known as the Newport Bridge, the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge was named after U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell in 1992. Built in 1969, this suspension bridge with deck truss approaches span 11,248 feet across Narragansett Bay, connecting Newport and Jamestown. It is the longest suspension bridge in New England and has towers reaching up to 400 feet above the water.
