Also known as the Chesapeake Bay State, Maryland is in the mid-Atlantic region and is one of the smallest states geographically yet one of the most densely populated with around six million residents. Having donated land to the creation of the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., one architectural marvel to see in the state is the Washington Monument, an impressive monument commemorating former president George Washington. This enormous obelisk is made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss and is located on the National Mall. It is the world’s largest monumental obelisk and was completed in 1888 but has been changed in design over the years.
