The north part Florida encompasses both northwestern Florida, commonly referred to as the “Florida Pan Handle”, and northeastern Florida, which includes the most populous Florida city of Jacksonville. Florida has the longest coastline in the continental U.S., swimming, snorkeling, and surfing are popular at nearby barrier island beaches. Championship golf courses in the area include the famous Ponte Vedra Beach’s TPC Sawgrass, best known as the headquarters of the PGA Tour. One of the most common landmarks in northern Florida is the Friendship Fountain, which can be found in St. John’s River Park. The Friendship Fountain in Jacksonville is one of the largest self-contained fountains, pumping 3,500 to 6,500 gallons of water per minute to a height of 100 feet, with 265 lights molding the water into a sparkling mist. Designed by architect Taylor Hardwick, it was first recognized as the world’s largest and tallest fountain in 1963.
