West Virginia is known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and hunting. West Virginia has historically thrived on the logging and coal mining industry as well as a significant political history, which includes its being one of the two states created during the Civil War. A prominent political piece of architecture is The West Virginia State Capital. This building is made of limestone and was designed by Cass Gilbert in the Colonial Revival and Italian Renaissance style. Gilbert’s design of the chamber’s interior was so well received that he eventually reused part of the design for the construction of the United States Supreme Court. It was completed in 1925 making this State Capitol building the tallest building in West Virginia standing at 292 feet tall.
